Introduction:
If the Amazon has a heart, we can say it is in Jauaperi River. In its upper course, at Xixuaú Reserve, we observe rare animals and exuberant vegetation and are sure to be surprised on every curve of its streams.
Peculiarities of the Region
Despite the beaches that arise during the dry season and villages with beautiful handicrafts, the Jauaperi river is home to some of the most beautiful species of Amazon wildlife - otters, manatees, storks, quatipurus, arboreal monkeys, huge black alligators, red toucans, spotted eagle and the scandalous multi-colored macaws. The animals are what compose the dream-like visual of this unusual ecological sanctuary where the local residents decided to preserve with ecotourism principles. If your greatest desire is to contemplate the wildlife, then this is your itinerary.
The area is about 500 km from Manaus, located in the state of Roraima, along the border of the native territory Waimiri-Atroari. Sailing on rivers with crystalline water, we can observe manatees in an informal natural tranquility and appreciate Guariba Monkeys singing in their impressive guttural voices.There, it is prohibited to use motor boats. Therefore the silence which is respected by the humans, allows the nature to remain wild. Its generous bio-diversity is the result of two factors: geomorphologic rich soil with absence of poaching. Some difficult species to be observed in the Rio Negro basin, such as storks and Cuxius apes, are commonly seen in the area.

Wij zoeken altijd samen met u naar het best passende schema voor de scherpste tarieven op de gewenste reisdagen. Dit verschilt per dag en per klant en om deze reden zijn de vluchten niet opgenomen in de reissom van de voorbeeld arrangementen op onze site.

Start of the Katerre Expedition through the Anavilhanas Archipelago. Lunch on board;
Anchorage for a quick speedboat ride through islands and lakes nearby;
Probable viewing of Tucuxi dolphins (Sotalia fluviatilis), Pink Dolphins (Inia Geoffrensis) and of the birds of the season: Maguari (Ardea cocoi), Herons (Casmerodius Albus), Blue and Red Macaws (Ara Ararauna), Parrots (Amazona Festiva), Heron-Tiger (Tigrisoma lineatum), Japiins (Cacicus Jail), Japós (Psarocolius Decumanus) and Otters (Galbulidae), among others;
Swim with lifebuoys on Rio Negro;
Return to the boat and proceed navigating to the Madadá lookout;
Dinner on board;
Overnight in the boat’s cabin or in hammocks on the Madadá lookout, a 2 floors bungalow with bathroom, among the forest, with beautiful views of the Rio Negro.
We start the day at Madadá.
Regional breakfast: fruits, jams, tapioca, tucumã, etc.
3 hour hike (round trip) through virgin forest to the Madadá Caves.
Upon return, visitation to native ranch, visitation to an orchard with fruits of the season.
Swimming with lifebuoys at Negro River. Lunch on board.
Speedboat trip to a Native Community. Exchange in the native language of the Tukano. Contact with the lifestyle and local traditions.
Return to the boat, we set sail to the “Praia do Sono” (“Sleepy Beach”).
Dinner, bonfire, native folklore storytelling. Overnight stay anchored by the beach.
3rd day: Jaú National Park (dry season)
We start the day at “Praia do Sono” (“Sleepy Beach”).
Set sail to the ICMBIO base, on the Park’s entrance
Navigation by the Jaú River, a river of mirror-like waters, with probable sighting of water mammals and birds.
Trip through Pauini River, exploring this tributary filled with boulders and waterfalls.
Return to the boat, navigation to the Aturiá community. Canoe night ride in the river, with light-spotting of alligators and nocturnal animals.
3rd day: Rio Negro (wet season)
Speedboat trip up Gato’s stream, to a waterfall. Time to relax among the nature.
Return to the boat. Lunch on board.
Navigation through the Birds slope, to the Moura village.
Exchange with the locals, purchase of supplies.
Return to the boat, we now enter the Jauaperi Rive.
Navigation through the Jauaperi River to Igarapé do Matias, where we will visit an alternative community school, with practices in environmental education and diffusion of local culture.
Arrival at the “cabocla” community of Mirapinima. Exchange with the locals and shopping for handicrafts made out of wood and fibers, unique to all of the Rio Negro basin.
Next to sunset, we arrive at the Xixuaú community
Breakfast, arrive in the Xixuau community and get to know the area and the locals.
Prepare the group for water trails through the lakes and streams of the area, rowed by our local guides in small canoes (2 passengers max.) to observe birds and aquatic mammals. Personalized treatment.
Viewing of giant otters, dolphins, toucans, probable siting of arborícolas monkeys searching for fruit in the flooded forest, among other animals.
Lunch on board.
Visit to the giant tree Samaúma, the biggest tree in the region. Fishing trip on canoes through the lake until nightfall. Special attention to the howler monkey calling all through the night.
Light-spotting of alligators and nocturnal animals
6th day: Xixuaú Reserve (dry season)
Before breakfast, observation of alligators by the riverside at the community port.
Navigation up the river to Iluminado`s beach, the last and beautiful site before the Waimiri-Atoari indigenous territory. Breakfast on board.
Swim with lifebuoys at the river`s beach.
Meeting with João Gringo, a great storyteller.
Visit to João’s small farm, where he grows manioc, bananas, pineapples, nuts and makes flour.
After lunch we will rest in hammocks under the trees at the beach.
Closer to sundown, we will take a canoe to go fishing. Most common species (depending on the bait) piranhas, pirarara, tucunaré e surubim.
After sunset, bonfire and dinner at the beach. Light-spotting of alligators and nocturnal animals (optional).
Storytelling of enchantments and unique animals.
6th day: Xixuaú Reserve (wet season)
Before breakfast, observation of alligators by the riverside at the community port.
Breakfast on board.
After breakfast, mini expedition to an overnight camp in the forest, at a privileged spot for wildlife observation.
The trek is made by canoe, through crystal clear stream waters, with stops for diving and underwater life observation.
Setting up the camp and “tapiri” construction for hammocks.
Lunch. Menu of the day: fresh fish with side dishes on board.
Bonfire, chats, tales and folklore of the creatures of the forest – Mapinguary, Matinta-Perêra, Curupira, Cobra Grande. Overnight stay at the hammocks.
7th day: Xixuaú Reserve (dry season)
We start the day at the beach. Before breakfast we will go on water trails for observation of forest animals. Probable sighting of the red faced spider monkey (the largest one in Brazil) and giant otters.
Return to the boat where we will navigate to the Curumin stream, of crystal clear waters. Breakfast Jacaré-Açu on board. Speedboat trip to the stream for diving with masks.
Return to the boat. Lunch on board.
Farewell meeting at the main maloca (an ancestral house used by the natives), handicraft exhibition, fraternization caipirinhas. Soccer match: Tourists X Locals.
3:00pm: We begin the trip back (non stop)
7th day: Xixuaú Reserve (Wet season)
We start the day at the forest. Prepare breakfast.
3hs trek in the old growth forest, to spot birds and mammals (Monkeys, Tapir, Sloths, White-lipped peccary), and hear all the wonderful sounds of the forest. Return to the boat. Lunch on board.
Farewell meeting at the main maloca (an ancestral house used by the natives), handicraft exhibition, fraternization caipirinhas. Soccer match: Tourists X Locals.
3pm: We start our trip back (non-stop)
Predicted arrival at Novo Airão for 11:00 am.
Interaction with pink dolphins;
City-tour through Novo Airão, workmanship, artisan shops and other city attractions.
Farewell lunch onboard.
Transport Novo Airão - Manaus, arrival at 3:30 pm.

Katerre heeft 2 schepen die de expedities verzorgen. Het schip 'Awapé' (16 meter lang) is een typische Amazone schip in lokale stijl die tot 8 passagiers kan herbergen en biedt een goed comfort niveau. Het andere schip is de 'Jacaré-Açú', eveneens een typische Amazone schip, maar iets groter, namelijk 20 meter lang en er zijn 3 verdiepingen. Er kunnen dan ook maar liefst 16 man aan boord. Doorgaans worden voor expedities met minder dan 8 personen het Awapé shipt gebruikt en voor expedities met meer dan 8 personen het 'Jacaré-Açú' schip. Beide schepen bieden cabines met airco en tot de faciliteiten behoort een solarium met hangmatten. Er zijn expedities van 3 en 4 nachten, maar ook langere expedities van meer dan 6 nachten.
